The rupiah exchange rate weakened again and broke through a new psychological level above Rp17,600 per US dollar during Friday morning’s trading session (15/5/2026).
Based on observations from the Google Finance platform at 09:03 WIB, the exchange rate for 1 US dollar was recorded at Rp17,603.20. The movement was reflected in Morningstar data displayed on Google Finance. Meanwhile, on the Bloomberg platform, the rupiah also continued to move in a weakening trend against the US dollar.
Previously, the rupiah had closed at Rp17,529 per US dollar in the last trading session. At the opening of today’s trading, the rupiah moved within the range of Rp17,540 to Rp17,550 per US dollar before eventually surpassing the Rp17,600 per US dollar level.
Pressure on the rupiah occurred amid the strengthening of the US dollar globally, rising world oil prices, and increasing risk-off sentiment in financial markets due to geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East.
Earlier, Bank Permata Chief Economist Josua Pardede projected that the rupiah’s movement in the second quarter of 2026 would remain within the range of Rp17,200 to Rp17,600 per US dollar. According to him, elevated global oil prices and the lack of recovery in foreign capital inflows are the main factors weakening the rupiah.
“If Brent remains above US$110 per barrel and foreign capital inflows have not recovered, the rupiah could test the Rp17,800 level,” Josua Pardede said, as quoted by Kompas.com on Tuesday (5/5/2026).
A similar view was expressed by Doo Financial Futures Chief Analyst Lukman Leong, who stated that rising global crude oil prices and global market sentiment continue to weigh on regional currencies, including the rupiah.
“The rupiah and other regional currencies have been observed weakening significantly against the US dollar due to the renewed increase in global crude oil prices,” Lukman Leong said, as quoted by Kompas.com on Tuesday (12/5/2026).
Reuters also reported that the rupiah briefly touched a new record low at Rp17,535 per US dollar due to surging oil prices and investor concerns regarding Indonesia’s fiscal condition.
