DIGIVESTASI - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) projects that Indonesia could save foreign exchange of up to IDR 147.5 trillion by 2025 through the implementation of the mandatory biodiesel blending program of 40% or B40, which will take effect on January 1, 2025. The Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (Dirjen EBTKE) at the Ministry of ESDM, Eniya Listiani Dewi, stated that with the B40 program, Indonesia is expected to save foreign exchange of USD 9.33 billion or approximately IDR 147.5 trillion in 2025.
"This B40 program will save around IDR 147.5 trillion in foreign exchange," said Eniya at a press conference at the Ministry of ESDM's office in Jakarta on Monday (6/1/2025).
Indonesia has been implementing the 35% biodiesel program (B35) since August 2023, which in 2024 generated foreign exchange savings of IDR 122.98 trillion. Eniya added that the savings from the B40 program in 2025 are expected to increase by around IDR 25 trillion compared to B35.
Furthermore, Eniya explained that the transition from B35 to B40 will add a value of IDR 20.98 trillion to the biodiesel sector, higher than the added value from the B35 program, which was IDR 17.49 trillion. In addition, the B40 program is also expected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 41.46 million tons of CO2, an increase from the emission reduction of 34.56 million tons of CO2 recorded under the B35 program.
Minister of ESDM Bahlil Lahadalia previously stated that the implementation of B40 supports President Prabowo Subianto's vision for emission reduction and energy security. He also revealed plans to increase the biodiesel blending to B50 in 2026, which is expected to eliminate diesel imports in that year.
"If this program runs smoothly, under the direction of President Prabowo, we will push for the implementation of B50 in 2026 and ensure there will be no more diesel imports," said Bahlil in a press conference at the Ministry of ESDM building in Jakarta on Friday (3/1/2025).
In 2025, the government has set a B40 allocation of 15.6 million kiloliters (kl) of biodiesel, consisting of 7.55 million kl for subsidized biodiesel (PSO) and 8.07 million kl for non-subsidized biodiesel (non-PSO). The implementation of the B40 program is governed by the Minister of ESDM Decree No. 341.K/EK.01/MEM.E/2024. This program will be carried out by 24 Biofuel Companies (BBN) responsible for distributing biodiesel, two fuel distribution companies for PSO and non-PSO, as well as 26 other companies dedicated solely to distributing B40 for non-PSO.
