DIGIVESTASI - The government is moving closer to realizing green electricity exports to Singapore, supported by a plan to build an electrical transmission network that will connect Sumatra, Java, the Riau Islands, Batam, and eventually Singapore. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto revealed that the agreement regarding this electricity infrastructure was one of the outcomes of the 2nd Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Ministerial Meeting held in Jakarta on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.

"This will be part of the transmission network in Asia or ASEAN. The ASEAN Power Grid is a priority, and I also mentioned that this electrical grid will connect from Java-Sumatra to the Riau Islands, Batam, Bintan, and Karimun. This project will eventually supply solar energy to Singapore," said Airlangga in Jakarta, Thursday, August 22, 2024.

Previously, the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves) had stated that Indonesia would export 'clean' electricity of 2 Giga Watts (GW) to Singapore, sourced from Solar Power Plants (PLTS).

Deputy for Infrastructure and Transportation Coordination at Kemenko Marves, Rachmat Kaimuddin, explained that this electricity export would be conducted on the condition that Indonesia also benefits from it, specifically by boosting the development of the domestic New and Renewable Energy (EBT) industry. One of the efforts being made is to encourage the establishment of supporting industries such as solar panels and batteries that will be used for exporting electricity to Singapore.

"Our requirement is that the energy storage systems and solar panels must be produced in Indonesia. We are currently working to attract more factories to the country," Rachmat told CNBC Indonesia in the Energy Corner program, Thursday, May 2, 2024.

Rachmat added that the electricity export project to Singapore would act as a catalyst for the construction of solar panel and battery factories in Indonesia. Therefore, the electricity generated from the PLTS in Indonesia must come from solar panels produced domestically.

"There are solar panel developers who will build this PLTS, and they need to purchase solar panels. For that reason, we are requesting that the order be fulfilled by establishing factories in Indonesia so that everything progresses simultaneously," he explained.
