The Indonesian government has confirmed that in 2025, the country will not import essential commodities such as rice, corn, sugar, and salt. This decision was made after a limited meeting led by President Prabowo Subianto along with several relevant ministers on Monday, December 30, 2024, at the State Palace in Jakarta.
Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan revealed that the policy aims to strengthen domestic food security by focusing on increasing local production. "We have decided that first, we will not import rice next year, then corn, and will also add sugar for consumption and salt," said Zulkifli Hasan at the State Palace in Central Jakarta on Wednesday (January 1, 2025).
Zulhas also mentioned that rice production projections for 2025 show positive results. It is estimated that rice production in January 2024 will reach 0.8 million tons and increase to 1.3 million tons by January 2025. Furthermore, by February 2025, rice production is expected to reach 2.08 million tons.
Additionally, the government plans to increase the Government Purchase Price (HPP) for unhusked rice and corn. The HPP for unhusked rice will rise from IDR 6,000 per kilogram to IDR 6,500 per kilogram, while the HPP for corn will increase from IDR 5,000 per kilogram to IDR 5,500 per kilogram. This measure is expected to provide more incentives for farmers and improve their welfare. "Whatever the production of unhusked rice and corn from farmers, it will be purchased at the price set by the government,"
