DeepSeek shocks US stock market, world's 500 richest people lose USD 108 billion in a day

DIGIVESTASI - Chinese Company DeepSeek Shocks the U.S. Tech Stock Market. DeepSeek, a China-based company specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) development, successfully shocked the U.S. tech stock market.

On Monday, January 27, 2025, it was estimated that around 500 of the world’s wealthiest individuals experienced a total wealth loss of USD 108 billion, or about IDR 1.752 trillion (based on an exchange rate of 16,225), in just one day. This decline was led by Jensen Huang, the founder of Nvidia Corp.

The wealth loss was caused by a massive sell-off in tech company stocks, particularly those connected to DeepSeek, the Chinese AI developer, which also negatively affected major market indices.

According to a Yahoo Finance report published on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, the billionaire most affected by this decline was Jensen Huang, who lost about USD 20.1 billion, or roughly IDR 326.26 trillion.

Meanwhile, Larry Ellison, one of the co-founders of Oracle Corp, saw a wealth decline of USD 22.6 billion, equivalent to about IDR 366.85 trillion. Although the nominal loss was larger, this decline reflected only 12% of his total wealth, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Additionally, Michael Dell, the founder of Dell Inc, lost USD 13 billion, or about IDR 211.02 trillion, while Changpeng Zhao, one of the founders of Binance Holdings Ltd, experienced a wealth decline of USD 12.1 billion, which is approximately IDR 196.27 trillion.
