DIGIVESTASI - A Japanese man, Hiroto Kiritani, managed to survive by relying on free product coupons, despite having abundant wealth. Kiritani, who is nicknamed the "God of Freebies," revealed that he obtained these coupons from the companies he had invested in over the years.
At 75 years old, Kiritani started his career as a professional shogi player, a Japanese form of chess, before diving into the stock investment world at the age of 35. He accumulated his first 100 million yen in the stock market. By mid-2024, his wealth had surged to nearly 600 million yen, equivalent to approximately Rp 60 billion.
Despite his considerable fortune, Kiritani chose to live frugally. He wears simple clothes, avoids luxury brands, and travels by bike, which he bought using coupons. His living conditions resemble more of a cluttered warehouse than a luxurious house.
Kiritani's lifestyle change began after he experienced a significant loss of 200 million yen due to the stock market crash in 2008. That event made him determined never to waste money again. He started collecting coupons and stock benefits from over 1,000 companies he had invested in, including those in food, clothing, and entertainment sectors.
His daily life revolves around making use of coupons before they expire. His mornings begin by cycling around Tokyo, followed by visits to restaurants to enjoy free meals obtained from the coupons.
Kiritani claims that he can access various services through coupons, including gyms, movie tickets, sauna services, karaoke, and roller coasters, all for free. Each year, he receives over 300 movie vouchers and is able to watch up to 140 films, which is more than a professional film critic. However, Kiritani often doesn't know what's playing and instead finds theater seats comfortable for sleeping.
Kiritani's life philosophy is to maximize the use of every coupon he owns. His unusual lifestyle has drawn public attention and gone viral. He has even written a book and appeared on television shows to share his tips for frugal living, inspiring the younger generation to be more resourceful in using what's available to them.
His unique story has entertained and surprised many netizens, as reported by China’s WeMedia, Ins Daily. Many online users found Kiritani’s story amusing. “Being forced to exercise thanks to free gym coupons really made me laugh,” said one netizen. "Companies in China should follow this example. If stock prices fall, at least offer coupons to shareholders!" said another netizen.
