The Indonesian government, alongside domestic industry players, is strengthening its economic partnership with the United States (US) under the framework of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which emphasizes more robust and balanced trade and investment relations.
During a high-level business meeting hosted by Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs in collaboration with the Indonesian Embassy in Washington, D.C., Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to increase purchases of key American goods, particularly in the agriculture and energy sectors, with a total value of USD 34 billion, or approximately IDR 500 trillion.
“The economic relationship between Indonesia and the United States has long been strong and must continue to be nurtured. One way to reinforce this partnership is through commitments by Indonesian business leaders to procure top-quality American goods in the agriculture and energy sectors, with a total value of USD 34 billion,” stated Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, as quoted in a press release on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
The event was attended by several major Indonesian companies representing key sectors, including PT Pertamina, PT Busana Apparel Group (representing the Indonesian Textile Association), FKS Group, Sorini Agro Asia Corporindo, and the Indonesian Wheat Flour Producers Association. They engaged in direct discussions with their U.S. counterparts to explore investment opportunities and strengthen supply chains.
On the U.S. side, various industry leaders expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration. Wade Floyd of ExxonMobil remarked, “ExxonMobil is proud to support Indonesia’s energy needs. We bring decades of experience, a globally scaled supply system, and a long-term commitment to being a trusted energy partner.”
From the agricultural sector, Bryan Wiggins of Cotton Council International added, “Indonesia has consistently been one of the U.S.’s top partners in the cotton industry, ranking among the top ten export markets.”
Similarly, Anne Murphy from Cargill conveyed optimism about a long-term partnership, stating, “Indonesia holds strategic importance for us in many ways. We hope that this memorandum of understanding, along with the initial corn purchase, will mark the beginning of a broader and lasting partnership that evolves over time.”
Echoing that sentiment, Robert Cruise from Zen-Noh Grain Corporation noted, “Indonesia has long been a valued customer, with growing demand for high-quality U.S. agricultural products.”
The meeting resulted in the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between business stakeholders from both countries, signaling a new milestone in bilateral economic ties and unlocking new avenues for cooperation across sectors.
“We firmly believe this partnership will create thousands of quality jobs, support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and foster mutual exchange of knowledge and technology,” stated Sade Bimantara, Deputy Ambassador and Chargé d’Affaires Ad Interim of the Indonesian Embassy in the U.S.
Through a mutually respectful and forward-looking approach, Indonesia hopes that this economic collaboration will not only yield bilateral benefits but also contribute to regional and global stability and prosperity.
