Global Budget Cuts: Civil Servants at Risk as Nations Slash Spending

A wave of budget cuts is sweeping across several countries as governments aim to enhance financial efficiency. These decisions have had a significant impact on civil servants, with some countries announcing workforce reductions of up to 20%.

Here’s a breakdown of the countries implementing these budget reductions, as reported by CNBC Indonesia on Thursday (Feb 13, 2025):

1. Argentina Slashes Thousands of Jobs, Achieves Budget Surplus

Argentina has been undergoing a massive budget reduction since Javier Milei took office in 2023. His radical austerity measures, including government job cuts, have resulted in the country’s first budget surplus in 14 years.

Milei has halted public infrastructure projects, cut provincial fund transfers, reduced pension and civil servant salaries, slashed energy and transport subsidies, and eliminated over 30,000 government jobs.

Additionally, he vetoed two parliamentary bills aimed at increasing pension and higher education budgets, despite facing strong opposition in Congress.

"Today, we can proudly say that Argentina no longer has a budget deficit," said Economy Minister Luis Caputo on X. He announced that Argentina recorded a 1.8% fiscal surplus in 2024, marking a rare financial success.

2. U.S. Budget Cuts Under Trump-Musk Leadership

In the United States, President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, now heading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), are pushing for major spending reductions.

Musk warned that the U.S. financial situation is in crisis, necessitating drastic budget cuts. He was given authority to dissolve parts of the federal government to improve efficiency.

While Musk has not disclosed specific agencies facing job cuts, he revealed a potential reduction of US$ 1 trillion in various departments.

This move has sparked legal challenges, with critics arguing it constitutes an illegal power grab. Musk, however, dismissed these claims and questioned the law firms leading the lawsuits.

"Who is trying to block the will of the people with these anti-democratic lawsuits?" Musk posted on X.

Trump defended the initiative, stating that the reforms aim to eliminate government corruption.

"We want to fight corruption, yet it’s unbelievable that a judge would say ‘we don’t want you to do that’," Trump remarked.

3. Vietnam’s Budget Cuts to Affect 100,000 Civil Servants

Vietnam is implementing massive budget reductions, slashing 113 trillion dong (US$ 4.5 billion) over the next five years.

As part of this effort, the number of ministries and agencies has been reduced from 30 to 22, directly affecting civil servants, police, military personnel, and state-run media workers.

The cuts will result in 100,000 employees losing their jobs or being offered early retirement, although specific implementation details remain unclear.

"The state should not be a safe haven for incompetent officials," declared Vietnam’s Supreme Leader To Lam.

Despite concerns, Vietnam remains ambitious, targeting middle-income status by 2030 and high-income status by 2045.
