DIGIVESTASI - U.S. President Donald Trump announced a US$ 500 billion (approximately IDR 8,159 trillion) investment plan for the development of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in an effort to compete with other countries, particularly China. This investment is backed by several major companies, including the creators of ChatGPT, OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle. These three companies have formed a joint venture named Stargate, which aims to build data center complexes and create more than 100,000 jobs.

Stargate plans to allocate US$ 100 billion in the near future, while the remaining funds will be distributed gradually over the next four years. In this announcement, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Oracle founder Larry Ellison joined Trump.

The first Stargate project has already begun in Texas, where Ellison stated that 20 data centers will be built, each covering an area of 4.6 hectares. Each of these data centers is expected to leverage AI technology to analyze medical records and assist doctors in patient care.

“If you don't win, we wouldn’t have decided to do this,” Son told Trump, as quoted by Reuters.

Altman also offered praise, stating, "AGI can be built here, and we wouldn't be able to do it without you, Mr. President."

The Stargate project plan had actually been reported by The Information in March 2024, stating that OpenAI and Microsoft were considering a US$ 100 billion data center project, including an AI supercomputer named Stargate, which was planned to be launched by 2028.

Additionally, Trump had previously canceled the AI policy introduced by the Joe Biden administration, which aimed to reduce the risks posed by AI to consumers, workers, and national security.

Since AI requires significant energy, the project will also involve data centers equipped with thousands of interconnected AI chips. Trump emphasized, "They need to generate a lot of electricity, and we're making that happen by giving them the ability to produce their own power through the plants they have, if necessary."
