El Salvador now holds more than 6,000 Bitcoin after the country added to its holdings on December 29, 2024, reaching a total of 6,000.77 BTC, worth approximately USD 561.3 million or around IDR 9 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of IDR 16,185 per USD), according to data from the National Bitcoin Office. This latest purchase continues the country's consistent Bitcoin accumulation strategy, with its portfolio increasing by 19 BTC in the past week and 53 BTC over the last month, valued at USD 1.77 million and USD 4.95 million, respectively, based on information from Coinmarketcap as of December 31, 2024.
This systematic approach has proven to be profitable, with El Salvador's Bitcoin investment showing an unrealized gain of 105 percent, based on an average acquisition price of USD 45,465.
Since adopting Bitcoin as legal tender on September 6, 2021, El Salvador became the first country to do so. It started with a purchase of 200 BTC and has since maintained a consistent acquisition strategy, including the most recent purchase worth USD 1 million after a major agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for USD 1.4 billion.
Despite initial skepticism from international financial institutions such as the IMF, President Nayib Bukele’s administration has remained firm in its Bitcoin policy. The government’s daily Bitcoin purchase program has made El Salvador the sixth-largest Bitcoin holder in the world, joining major countries like the United States, China, and the United Kingdom.
During the recent recovery of the crypto market, the country’s Bitcoin portfolio has seen a substantial increase in value, and it is now estimated to be worth over half a billion dollars. Through the National Bitcoin Office, El Salvador continues to expand its cryptocurrency initiatives, with the country’s BTC reserves currently showing an unrealized profit of USD 152 million, according to data from Nayib Tracker.
