Warren Buffett, one of the world’s wealthiest and most successful entrepreneurs, is well known for his modest lifestyle. However, he dislikes being labeled as "frugal," preferring instead to describe himself as a man of simple tastes.
Here are some of Warren Buffett’s cost-conscious habits you might want to adopt:
1. Living in the Same Modest Home for Decades
According to Yahoo Finance, Buffett has lived in his Omaha, Nebraska home for over 60 years. Despite his vast and growing fortune, he has never felt the need to upgrade to an extravagant mansion.
While spacious, his home remains relatively modest for someone of his net worth. Buffett has even called it one of the top three investments he ever made.
2. Rarely Using Debt
Buffett strongly avoids taking on consumer debt. His only known loan was a mortgage for a vacation home he bought in Laguna Beach, California, in 1971—even though he could have paid for it in cash.
In an interview with CNBC, Buffett said he chose a 30-year mortgage because he believed he could make better use of the funds through other investments.
3. Driving an Affordable Car
Unlike many billionaires with fleets of luxury sports cars, Buffett drives a more modest vehicle. His latest car, a Cadillac XTS, was purchased in 2014. He mentioned to Forbes that he drives only about 3,500 miles per year, so there's little reason for him to buy new cars often.
This habit reflects Buffett's principle of spending within his means.
4. Avoiding Unnecessary Spending
Buffett has never been one to chase after designer fashion or the latest tech gadgets. He used a basic mobile phone for years before finally switching to an Apple smartphone in 2020.
He emphasizes spending discipline and once advised, "Do not save what is left after spending, but spend what is left after saving."
5. Avoiding Borrowing to Invest
In his younger days, Buffett once borrowed money to invest in stocks, but he later warned against this approach, noting the significant risks that come with investing on borrowed funds.
6. Finding Creative Ways to Save
When his first child was born, Buffett turned a dresser drawer into a crib. Later, for his second child, he opted to rent a crib rather than buy a new one. Buffett has always found clever ways to save money without compromising on essentials.
