Trump Reaffirms Threat of 100 Percent Tariffs on BRICS Countries

On Thursday (January 30, 2025), U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his threat to impose a 100 percent tariff on BRICS countries. This statement comes as the deadline for imposing tariffs on Canada and Mexico approaches. Previously, Trump had warned of a 100 percent tariff on BRICS nations, which include Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Trump emphasized that if any of the BRICS countries or member nations create a competing currency for the U.S. dollar, they would face these consequences.

“We will demand a commitment from these countries that they will not create a new BRICS currency or support another currency to replace the powerful U.S. dollar, or they will face 100 percent tariffs,” Trump explained in his statement, as quoted by AFP on Friday (January 31, 2025).

Additionally, Trump also threatened China, a member of the BRICS bloc, with a 10 percent levy on Chinese goods, set to take effect on February 1, 2025.

Reports have previously revealed that BRICS countries are discussing the possibility of expanding transactions using national currencies and creating a shared currency within the bloc. However, no final decision has been made on this matter yet.

BRICS is an association of nations formed in 2006 by Russia, China, India, and Brazil, with South Africa joining in 2011. Since early 2024, several other countries have also joined the BRICS bloc.
