Prabowo Subianto Decides to Build a 700-Km Giant Sea Wall from Banten to East Java

President Prabowo Subianto has decided to proceed with the construction of a giant sea wall stretching 700 kilometers from Banten to East Java. This decision was conveyed by the President's Special Envoy for Climate and Energy, Hashim Sujono Djojohadikusumo. "The Prabowo administration has decided to implement several strategic programs, including the construction of a giant sea wall stretching 700 km from Banten to East Java," said Hashim during the "ESG Sustainable Forum 2025" event, streamed online in Jakarta on Friday (January 31, 2025).

Hashim explained that this program aims to protect the rice fields located along the northern coast of Java. He highlighted public concerns regarding the sea wall phenomenon, where fishermen feel threatened by rising sea levels. "This is all caused by climate change," he added.

Hashim further stated that the plan for the giant sea wall has been under discussion since 1994, when the New Order government recognized the threat posed by rising sea levels. However, the project had not been executed until now. Hashim estimated that the construction of the sea wall would take between 10 to 20 years to complete.

He also emphasized that building food estates in Kalimantan or Papua would be futile if millions of hectares of rice fields were submerged due to rising sea levels. Therefore, he urged the public to support this major project. "It’s never too late for us to commit to protecting millions of hectares of the most productive and fertile rice fields along the northern coast of Java," Hashim stated.

Earlier, President Prabowo Subianto instructed his team to review the construction of a giant sea wall from Jakarta to Cirebon as part of the 2025 National Strategic Program (PSN). Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, explained that this directive resulted from an internal meeting led by President Prabowo regarding the development of special economic zones (KEK) and the completion of the PSN for 2024-2025.

Airlangga added that the Jakarta-Cirebon sea wall would be linked to the flood and tidal wave control sea wall already built in Tambaklorok, Semarang, Central Java. The project will be financed using a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) scheme and will be included in the 2025 PSN list as part of efforts to enhance energy and food security.
