President Prabowo Subianto wore a formal suit during his first Annual Session of the MPR/DPR and DPD of the Republic of Indonesia at the Parliament Building on Friday (August 15, 2025). This marked the end of the tradition of wearing traditional attire during the Annual Session, a practice that had been a hallmark during the tenure of the 7th President, Joko Widodo.
The Head of State arrived at around 8:35 a.m. WIB dressed in a grey formal suit paired with a light blue tie and a black peci (cap). Meanwhile, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka appeared in a black formal suit with a light blue tie.
During his presidency, Jokowi almost always attended the Annual Session in traditional attire. For example, in the 2024 Annual Session, he wore the Betawi Ujung Serong traditional outfit, a costume historically worn by Betawi nobility, featuring a signature batik cloth draped diagonally from the waist to the thigh. In the 2023 Annual Session, he donned the Tanimbar tribal attire from Maluku.
Jazilul Fawaid, a member of the DPR from the National Awakening Party (PKB) faction, stated that the current rule for the Annual Session is to wear formal attire.
“This is a state event, so naturally we wear the type of clothing that is commonly used in official state functions. I think it is appropriate for all of us to wear suits in accordance with our national dress code,” Jazilul said.
In addition to ending the traditional attire practice, Prabowo also chose not to continue Jokowi’s tradition of holding the Independence Day Ceremony at the new capital city (IKN) Nusantara. This year, all Independence Day celebrations took place within the State Palace complex and in the Jakarta Capital Region (DKI Jakarta).
