Tony Blair Visits Jakarta, Talks Nuclear Energy Plans with Indonesian Leaders
Jakarta – Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair met with Presidential Envoy Hashim Djojohadikusumo and top Indonesian parliament officials at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Jakarta on Tuesday (April 22, 2025), discussing a potential partnership in nuclear power development.
Deputy MPR Speaker Eddy Soeparno revealed that the talks included Indonesia’s ambition to build renewable and alternative energy sources over the next 15 years—with nuclear energy as part of the plan.
Blair introduced the UK’s progress in developing small modular nuclear reactors, ranging from 300 to 500 MW, saying they’re a perfect fit for island nations like Indonesia.
“We’re waiting on a presentation from a British energy company to learn more about how their technology could be applied here,” Eddy said.
Though no final site has been chosen, Bangka Belitung and West Kalimantan are currently being evaluated as possible locations for the project.
“These plans are being shaped through the 2025–2034 electricity roadmap, which includes a goal of generating 1 GW from nuclear energy. This could be the start of our nuclear future,” Eddy concluded.
