China has once again showcased its technological advancement by developing a mini unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) resembling a mosquito.
According to reports from China’s state media, this mosquito-sized drone was specifically engineered for military purposes, with an emphasis on stealth operations.
This micro drone is the product of research conducted by the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) located in Hunan Province. Visually, it features leaf-shaped wings and three ultra-thin legs akin to strands of hair. Its overall design aims to mimic both the flight dynamics and appearance of real insects.
This innovation in micro drone technology was presented as a symbol of China's growing military sophistication, with one of Asia’s most powerful armed forces, as shown last week on the state-owned broadcaster CCTV-7.
As reported by The Independent on Monday, June 30, 2025, the drone is equipped with a proportional camera and microphone capable of capturing images, audio, and electronic signals.
Liang Hexing, a student from NUDT, explained that the robotic device is well-suited for reconnaissance missions, intelligence gathering, and special operations in combat zones.
China's micro drone now joins the global race in developing compact UAVs, alongside notable competitors such as RoboBee and Black Hornet, according to TheDefencePost.
For reference, RoboBee is a project from Harvard's research labs, designed to fly and land with movements similar to those of a fly.
