Apple is reportedly planning to make changes to the screen size of the base model iPhone 17. This information was revealed by Ross Young, founder of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) and Vice President of Counterpoint Research.

Known for his accurate screen rumors, Ross Young disclosed that the iPhone 17 will feature a 6.3-inch display. This screen size is larger than the 6.1-inch display used in the iPhone 16, indicating that the iPhone 16 is the last base model to have a 6.1-inch screen.

This change means the base model iPhone 17 will have the same screen size as the iPhone 17 Pro, similar to what was seen with the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro. However, despite sharing the same 6.3-inch size, the iPhone 17 Pro is still expected to have superior display features, such as ProMotion technology and a higher peak brightness.

Meanwhile, other variants in the iPhone 17 lineup will come with different screen sizes. The iPhone 17 Slim (or Air), rumored to replace the iPhone 16 Plus, will have a 6.6-inch screen, slightly smaller than the 6.7-inch display on the Plus model. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro Max remains the largest with a 6.9-inch screen.

However, there is some disappointing news. According to GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu, the base model iPhone 17 will be powered by the A18 chip and equipped with 8GB of RAM, exactly the same as the iPhone 16. This means there will be no improvement in chipset or memory capacity. Although there were rumors suggesting the iPhone 17 would get a RAM upgrade, Apple apparently decided against it.

The decision to keep the same chip and RAM as its predecessor makes the base iPhone 17 feel like a slightly larger version of the iPhone 16. This move is somewhat confusing and might make the base iPhone 17 less appealing compared to other variants.

In contrast, other models such as the iPhone 17 Slim, Pro, and Pro Max are rumored to come with the A19 chip and 12GB of RAM. There is speculation that Apple is deliberately encouraging consumers to choose the more expensive Air, Pro, or Pro Max models, which are more profitable for the company.
