China Intensifies Its AI Race Against the US, DeepSeek Emerges as a Game-Changer

China is ramping up its efforts to challenge the United States (US) in artificial intelligence (AI) development, undeterred by Washington’s continuous restrictions on Beijing’s access to AI chips and advanced semiconductor technology from the US and its allies.

One of the most striking examples of China’s progress is DeepSeek, a Chinese AI company that has disrupted the global AI industry. DeepSeek has successfully developed an accurate AI system at a significantly lower cost compared to its US competitors.

According to Lee Kai-fu, CEO of Chinese AI startup 01.AI, China is now only three months behind the US in certain AI development areas.

Lee, a veteran figure in the AI industry and former Google China head, stated that DeepSeek’s emergence is a testament to China’s advancements in software infrastructure engineering.

DeepSeek Challenges US AI Supremacy

DeepSeek made headlines in the tech industry with the launch of its AI model R1 in January. The company claims that the system was trained using less advanced chips and at a lower cost than its US competitors.

This breakthrough debunked assumptions that US sanctions would significantly hinder China's AI progress.

"Previously, I estimated that China was lagging 6-9 months behind the US in all AI aspects. Now, I believe the gap is only around three months for certain core technologies. In fact, in some specific areas, China is already ahead," Lee told Reuters on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.

US Sanctions Backfire, Pushing China to Innovate Faster

While US-imposed sanctions pose short-term challenges for China’s AI sector, they have also fueled China’s determination to innovate independently without relying on US technology.

Lee highlighted that several Chinese companies have already developed their own AI algorithms.

"DeepSeek has been able to discover new thought processes that enhance its learning system, allowing it to compete with the US. It is learning quickly and has already become more innovative," he explained.

China Accelerates AI Development After OpenAI's ChatGPT Release

China has been accelerating its AI advancements since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in late 2022. Before DeepSeek’s emergence, many Chinese tech executives admitted that they were lagging behind the US in AI innovation.

Lee, who founded the venture capital firm 01.AI in March 2023, has also invested in promising Chinese AI startups such as ZhipuAI and Moonshot. Additionally, he has played a role in supporting AI development at major Chinese tech giants, including Baidu, Alibaba, and ByteDance.
