Good news is emerging from the trade dispute between the United States (US) and China. Kevin Hassett, Director of the White House National Economic Council, stated that President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping may hold discussions regarding trade sometime this week.
“We expect President Trump to have an excellent discussion on trade negotiations this week with President Xi,” Hassett said during an appearance on ABC News’ “This Week,” as reported by CNBC International on Monday (June 2, 2025).
“That’s what we’re hoping for,” he added.
However, he also mentioned that it’s unclear whether the meeting has been scheduled for a specific date. Nonetheless, he confirmed that there have been talks about addressing the Geneva Agreement, which had previously been agreed upon by both the US and China.
“The expectation is that both parties have expressed a willingness to negotiate,” he continued.
“Xi and Trump are likely to speak soon regarding trade, although no exact date has been set,” Hassett reiterated.
The potential discussion between the two leaders would mark a significant development in the ongoing trade negotiations, coming just weeks after they met in Switzerland and reached a 90-day trade agreement.
Tensions had escalated last week following President Trump’s accusation that China had breached the preliminary trade deal agreed upon with the United States.
“This is how MR. NICE GUY is supposed to act!” Trump wrote in a social media post.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump also said he expected to speak with Xi soon to address the accusations surrounding the trade deal.
Other members of the Trump administration have also voiced criticism toward China in recent days over the slow progress in trade negotiations and suggested that further talks are on the horizon.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick commented on Sunday that China was “just slowing down the deal.”
“I think slowing down is the right way to put it, and I believe Donald Trump sees it that way too,” Lutnick said during an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” as quoted by the same source.
Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated last week on Fox News that the trade talks with China were “somewhat stalled.”
“I’m confident that we’ll have more discussions with them in the coming weeks,” he said.
