The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, stated that the country could save up to hundreds of trillions of rupiah if Indonesia successfully achieves full domestic energy self-sufficiency.

Prabowo made this statement while delivering a speech at the inauguration of the Forel Field and Terubuk Field projects, located offshore in the Natuna Sea, Riau Islands.

These two projects are operated by the Cooperation Contract Contractor (KKKS) Medco E&P Natuna Ltd, an Indonesian-owned private oil and gas exploration and production company.

“If we can attain energy self-sufficiency, we will save tens of billions of US dollars—equivalent to hundreds of trillions of rupiah—and that money will no longer flow out of the country,” he remarked during his virtual speech on Friday (May 16, 2025).

Furthermore, Prabowo emphasized that the commencement of production in these oil and gas fields proves Indonesia's capability to independently manage its natural resources. This is reflected in the Domestic Component Level (TKDN), which has reached nearly 100%.

“This inauguration demonstrates that we have a bright and promising future, thanks to our abundant natural wealth. Precisely because of that bright future, we must remain vigilant. There are still powerful forces that do not want Indonesia to become strong. For centuries, such powers have aimed to divide and weaken us,” he added.

Prabowo also noted that these two oil and gas projects mark the first to commence production during his administration.

“I want to express how proud we are—both the government and the people of Indonesia—of this remarkable achievement. This marks the first inauguration of an oil lifting project under the new government I am leading,” Prabowo explained.

The Forel and Terubuk Fields are located in the South Natuna Sea Block B PSC area, offshore in the Natuna Sea, Riau Islands.

The Forel Field, in particular, has an oil production capacity of up to 10,000 barrels per day (bpd), with potential output reaching 13,500 bpd.

The project includes the development of the Marlin Natuna FPSO, construction of two platforms, and drilling of seven wells.

Production at the Forel Field began on May 12, 2025, employing approximately 1,500 workers.

The total investment in the Forel Field is US$ 282 million or around Rp 4.64 trillion, with US$ 135 million (Rp 2.22 trillion) allocated to facilities and US$ 147 million (Rp 2.42 trillion) for well development.

Meanwhile, the Terubuk Field comprises two main facilities: Terubuk L (WHP-L) and Terubuk M (WHP-M). The field began initial production on April 24, 2025, with a daily output of 4,000 bpd. Terubuk M is scheduled to begin operations in October 2026.

Total oil production from the Terubuk Field is projected to reach 6,500 bpd, with additional gas production potential of 60 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD).

The Terubuk Field project involves more than 650 workers and requires a total investment of US$ 326 million or Rp 5.36 trillion. Of that, US$ 182 million (Rp 2.99 trillion) is allocated to facility development, while US$ 144 million (Rp 2.37 trillion) is dedicated to well investments.
