Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa responded to the situation in several countries that have begun to feel the impact of the Middle East conflict. For instance, the Philippines has declared a national energy emergency, while Bangladesh is starting to experience a fuel crisis.
Purbaya stated that an energy emergency does not stem from the state budget (APBN), but rather from supply disruptions. He emphasized that Indonesia must remain prepared if such conditions persist over a prolonged period.
“An energy emergency is not about the state budget. What I am concerned about is when supply stops. It’s not about prices, but the absence of supply. Currently, supply still exists, so it cannot yet be called an emergency, but we must continue to stay prepared,” Purbaya said at his office in Central Jakarta on Wednesday.
He assured that the state budget is still resilient enough to withstand rising energy prices and will not be revised until the end of the year. However, he noted that the final decision rests with President Prabowo Subianto.
“I will not change the state budget or existing subsidies unless prices reach extremely high levels. With current price conditions until the end of the year, the budget remains resilient. However, the final decision depends on the leadership, but from my perspective, it is still safe,” he explained.
Purbaya also considered it too early to adjust oil prices and energy subsidies within the state budget.
“If prices rise significantly, then we will recalculate. It is not automatic that once prices reach US$100, changes are immediately made, as we use an average calculation,” he added.
