The relationship between former U.S. President Donald Trump and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk appears to have officially fallen apart. Trump even issued a strong warning to Musk over his support for the Democratic Party.
In an interview with NBC News, as reported by Reuters on Sunday (June 8, 2025), Trump confirmed that his personal relationship with Musk had ended. He also warned that there could be serious consequences if Musk truly finances Democratic candidates who oppose Trump’s proposed tax and massive spending bill.
However, Trump did not clarify what form those consequences might take. He also mentioned that there has been no discussion so far regarding a potential investigation into Musk.
When asked whether his relationship with the Tesla and SpaceX chief was over, Trump replied, “It seems so.”
Trump emphasized that he had no intention of reconciling. “I have no plans to talk to him,” Trump stated. Nevertheless, he admitted he has not yet considered canceling U.S. government contracts with Musk’s Starlink service or halting SpaceX rocket launches.
The tension between Trump and Musk has intensified this week. Musk openly denounced the bill backed by Trump, labeling it a “disgusting abomination.” His opposition has complicated efforts to pass the legislation in Congress, where the Republican majority is extremely narrow.
The bill narrowly passed in the House last month and is now under debate in the Senate. Analysts predict that the bill could add US$ 2.4 trillion to the U.S. national debt over the next ten years, which currently stands at US$ 36.2 trillion. This projection has raised concerns among many lawmakers, including Republicans.
On another front, Musk has floated the idea of forming a new political party to represent the majority of Americans who feel caught in the middle of extreme political polarization. Despite that, Trump remains optimistic that his bill will pass before Independence Day on July 4. “People who were once doubtful are now enthusiastically supporting the bill,” Trump said.
Meanwhile, Musk appears to be de-escalating the feud. He has removed several posts from social media that criticized Trump, including those expressing support for Trump’s impeachment.
One deleted post was a reply to another user who wrote, “President vs Elon. Who wins? I’m with Elon. Trump should be impeached.” Musk had replied simply: “Yes.”
In the This Past Weekend podcast hosted by Theo Von, fellow Republican JD Vance described Musk’s criticism of Trump as a major misstep. “I’ve always been loyal to the President. And I hope Elon can eventually return to the fold. But it seems like things have gone too far,” Vance said.
Musk was previously one of Trump’s largest campaign donors. He contributed nearly US$ 300 million to Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign and claimed to have helped Republicans secure control of both the House and the Senate.
Trump even appointed Musk to lead a government efficiency team aimed at reducing federal spending. However, the actual savings achieved were minimal, only cutting about 0.5% of the total budget. Now, their relationship appears to be entirely fractured. Trump is scheduled to attend a UFC event in New Jersey on Saturday night, while Musk is confirmed not to attend.
