The face-to-face meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump in Anchorage, Alaska, on Friday (August 15, 2025) local time, ended without any agreement to stop or resolve the war in Ukraine, although both leaders described the talks as productive. In their brief remarks to the media, they stated that progress had been made, though neither specified the issues discussed.
“There are many points on which we agreed. I think there are still a few key matters we haven’t fully resolved, but we’ve made some progress,” Trump said, as reported by Reuters on Saturday (August 16, 2025). He added, “There is no deal until there is a deal.”
Neither Trump nor Putin provided details or answered any questions. Trump, who is usually outspoken, chose to ignore reporters’ queries. According to Reuters, the talks initially appeared to yield no meaningful step toward a ceasefire in what has become Europe’s deadliest conflict in 80 years, nor toward a future meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy—two outcomes Trump had aimed for ahead of the summit.
Putin expressed hope that Ukraine and its European allies would take the results of the U.S.-Russia negotiations constructively and avoid undermining the progress made. “I hope today’s agreement will serve as a reference point, not only to address the Ukraine issue but also to initiate the restoration of pragmatic and businesslike relations between Russia and the United States,” Putin stated. However, he emphasized that what Russia calls the “root causes” of the conflict must be eliminated to achieve lasting peace—a clear sign of his refusal to accept a ceasefire.
The anticlimactic end of the summit contrasted sharply with its grand opening. Upon Putin’s arrival at the U.S. Air Force base in Alaska, a red carpet awaited him. Trump greeted him warmly while American military aircraft flew overhead. Trump expressed hope that a ceasefire initiated by Putin could bring peace to the region and bolster his image as a global peacemaker worthy of a Nobel Peace Prize.
For Putin, the summit itself was already a major victory regardless of its outcome. It marked his first meeting with a U.S. president since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. He could portray it as proof that the West’s years-long attempt to isolate Russia had failed and that Moscow had regained its rightful place at the high table of international diplomacy.
According to Bloomberg, in an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity after the summit, Trump said there were still unresolved issues following his talks with Putin. He reiterated that no deal had been reached and shifted the focus to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, saying the decision to end the war ultimately rests with him.
“There are one or two quite significant points, but I think those can be worked out,” Trump said in the interview. “In fact, it’s up to President Zelenskiy to bring it to an end. I also want to stress that European countries should be more involved, but in the end, it’s President Zelenskiy’s responsibility.”
