United States President Donald Trump stated that a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia is “very close.” However, European leaders remain skeptical as Russian missiles continue to strike Ukrainian territory.

“We are getting closer to a deal,” Trump said, as reported by AFP on Wednesday (November 26, 2025).

Trump appeared frustrated over his inability to fulfill last year’s election promise in which he claimed he could quickly end the war. The initial U.S. proposal—which heavily favored Russia—has since been replaced with a revised plan that gives more consideration to Ukraine’s interests.

A Ukrainian official said that the new version is significantly better. Even so, U.S. officials admit that several complex issues are still unresolved.

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron dismissed the idea of a quick solution, asserting that “it is clear Russia has no desire” for a ceasefire or to engage in discussions on a newly adjusted proposal that leans more in Ukraine’s favor.

Intensive discussions have been ongoing since the weekend, when representatives from Ukraine and the U.S. met in Geneva, Switzerland, to go over Trump’s initial 28-point proposal aimed at ending the bloody conflict.

The most recent negotiations involving U.S. and Russian delegations were held in Abu Dhabi. Additionally, leaders from a coalition of 30 pro-Ukraine countries convened via video call on Tuesday.

U.S. negotiator Dan Driscoll appeared optimistic after meeting with his Russian counterparts. “The talks have gone well, and we remain optimistic,” his spokesperson said.

The White House claims substantial progress has been made in efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war. They acknowledge that some details remain complicated, but emphasize that they are not impossible to resolve.

Nevertheless, the conflict—sparked by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022—continues relentlessly.

Massive explosions shook Kyiv around 01:00 (23:00 GMT), as Russian drones and missiles struck the city, igniting fires in multiple apartment buildings. City officials reported that seven people were killed.
