DIGIVESTASI - Indonesia Approaches Realization of Nuclear Power Plant. Indonesia's plan to establish a Nuclear Power Plant (PLTN) is coming closer to fruition, with the country having met 16 out of 19 required conditions.

Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Dadan Kusdiana, explained that only two more requirements need to be fulfilled to realize the PLTN. "We have already met 16 of the requirements, just two more to go. NEPIO and going nuclear. The government needs to declare that we are going nuclear. Whether a Presidential Decree is needed, this is still undecided. Meanwhile, NEPIO is still under discussion," he said at the Directorate General of Oil and Gas, ESDM Ministry, Jakarta, Friday (June 14, 2024).

Additionally, Dadan revealed that the government has opened communication with several foreign companies interested in building a nuclear power plant in Indonesia. "We are communicating not only with Russia but also with Japan, Korea, and America. The best option will be selected," he stated.

Previously, Secretary General of the National Energy Council (DEN), Djoko Siswanto, mentioned that to commercialize nuclear energy, Indonesia must meet 19 conditions recommended by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Currently, Indonesia has met 16 out of the 19 requirements.

"To commercialize nuclear energy, we must meet 19 conditions, and we have met 16. Three more to go, one of which is NEPIO," Djoko said at the Press Conference on Achievements in 2023 and the 2024 Work Program of the National Energy Council (DEN), Wednesday (January 17, 2024).

Djoko added that the plan to establish the Nuclear Energy Program Implementation Organization (NEPIO) is currently awaiting approval from President Joko Widodo. NEPIO will be responsible for preparing the construction of the nuclear power plant.

"DEN has also sent a letter to the chairman of DEN, namely the President and Vice President, to seek guidance on the establishment of NEPIO and the construction of nuclear power," said Djoko.
