Minister of Energy to Form Special Team to Monitor Fuel Quality

Jakarta – Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, plans to establish a special task force to ensure fuel quality meets official specifications. This decision comes in response to public concerns regarding allegations of Pertalite being mixed with Pertamax.

"We will form a well-structured team to guarantee that people purchase fuel according to its specifications and designated price. So, there will be no issues," Bahlil stated during a press conference at the ESDM Ministry in Central Jakarta on Wednesday (Feb 26, 2025).

He reassured the public that all fuel circulating in the market adheres to existing quality standards and specifications.

"We have RON 90, RON 92, RON 95, up to RON 98. High-quality fuel cannot be mixed because each type has its own specifications. There's no need to worry," he explained.

Bahlil also emphasized that fuel prices reflect their quality.

"If you want premium fuel, of course, the price will be higher. There are also mid-range options available at lower prices. Everything already has its specific standards," he added.

Improving Fuel Import Management

Furthermore, Bahlil revealed that the ESDM Ministry is making improvements in fuel import regulations. One key measure is discontinuing the practice of granting import licenses for an entire year.

"We will now issue import permits every six months, with evaluations every three months to ensure better oversight," he said.

Additionally, the government has halted crude oil exports from domestic production to prioritize refining within Indonesia.

"Now, we require all domestically produced oil to be processed within the country. This is done by blending high-quality oil with medium-grade oil to ensure it meets the specifications of our refineries," he concluded.
