DIGIVESTASI - High rate of crypto addiction among UK youth sparks serious concerns. The high rate of addiction to crypto trading among the UK's younger generation has sparked serious concerns regarding its impact on public health in the country.
During the ConFedExpo event that took place in Manchester, the Head of the UK's National Health Service (NHS), Amanda Pritchard, highlighted the growing social needs of young people in the UK who are increasingly exposed to and addicted to crypto trading. Pritchard urged UK lawmakers to take action in response to this trend.
"There are more and more opportunities for young people to become entangled in gambling addiction, including in the unregulated cryptocurrency market," Pritchard said, citing staff experiences she heard during a visit to a national gambling clinic earlier this year.
Pritchard emphasized the addictive nature of crypto investments, warning about the dangers of high-risk bets on volatile assets. He emphasized that this trend could put additional pressure on the NHS, which may have to care for more individuals who suffer financial losses and require treatment.
In addition, Pritchard underlined the need for judicious consideration in the allocation of limited NHS resources to deal with this growing problem.
The Urgency of Crypto Regulation in the UK
The UK government has taken steps to regulate the crypto industry in the country. In June 2023, King Charles gave his approval for a law to regulate crypto under the same regulation as other financial services.
However, the UK Treasury rejected the proposal to regulate crypto retail trading in the same way as gambling. Instead, they opted to regulate crypto trading as part of financial services.
In April 2024, Economic Secretary Bim Afolami stated that the UK Government began planning to introduce legislation that would regulate stablecoins as well as crypto staking and exchange activity in June or July this year.
